How caring about skin care can benefit your skin, the planet, and your wallet.
What Is Clean Skin Care?
It’s no secret that the skin care world can be difficult to navigate. With so many products available and advances in the science of skin care, it’s important to know what you’re putting on your skin and why. At LifeVantage, our commitment to you starts with safe, effective ingredients and products that are good for you and good for the planet. It starts with the science of activation and our definition of “clean.”*
Our TrueScience formulas are backed by scientific research. But even the best research can be undermined or undone by poor quality ingredients. That’s why the core of our activated skin care products is quality. We consciously source active ingredients from reputable suppliers with high ethical and quality standards. They must be able to show us the science and provide ingredient forms that are effective for your skin health, so you will see and feel results.*
Clean Skin Care Is Good for the Planet
For decades, traditional skin care formulation and manufacturing has taken a toll on environments around the world. Typical threats include sourcing ingredients in a way that disrupts local ecology, sourcing ingredients from far away (resulting in increased emissions), using harmful materials like plastic in packaging, and using straight-up harmful ingredients that end up in our lakes, oceans, and rivers. While water treatment facilities do their best to clean up this water, it’s not enough. Much of what we use—soaps, shampoos, oils, etc.—ends up in local water sources and can be harmful to wildlife. One way to help reduce this impact is to ensure you’re using products formulated without pollutants like sulfates, parabens, and microplastics.
When packaging and shipping our TrueScience products, we seek packaging and materials that are recyclable, reusable, and responsible. Our goal is to have zero-waste packaging—every part of the packaging is recyclable, reusable, or compostable—by 2030. Because a product can only be safe and effective for health if it is safe and sustainable for our planet. We also avoid using ingredients like phthalates and triclosan, a best practice in non-toxic skin care.
Clean Skin Care Is Good for You
Perhaps the most obvious reason clean skin care is important is simply that it’s better for you! Just like the environment, your skin can be harmed by products that may appear in traditional skin care products. Such ingredients can be used for a pleasant scent or viscosity, but can cause more overall harm than good, depending on the ingredients and your skin.
TrueScience is all about activating skin health and we are diligent about choosing safe ingredients in our formulas. Here are some ingredients that we avoid using in our effort to provide you with the best possible products:
TrueScience clean skin care, personal care, and hair care products are free of:
- Aluminum
- Artificial Colors (FD&C)
- Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA)/Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
- Ethanolamine compounds
- Formaldehyde releasers
- Parabens
- Petrolatum
- Phthalates
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
- Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
- Triclosan
A note about fragrance: While we strive for the natural option whenever possible, some essential oils—the most commonly used natural fragrances—can be sensitizing and cause irritation. We will only select fragrances that have no documented negative health impacts, which means sometimes synthetic is the better choice.
We also have our clean skin care products assessed by Think Dirty®, an app that assesses products and how “dirty” they are (bad for you and the environment) on a scale of 0–10. LifeVantage is proud to have 3 TrueScience products with a Think Dirty score of 0, and no TrueScience products rank higher than a 1. In comparison, a popular skin care brand has several products with scores higher than 7.
When it comes down to it, you should be as mindful about what you put on your skin as you are about what you eat. And at LifeVantage, we’ve curated our clean skin care system with that mindfulness already built in.
Clean Skin Care Is Good for Your Wallet
Of course, an increase in quality can come with an increase in price—often substantially so. In many cases, this is unavoidable; it simply costs more to source high-quality ingredients and avoid cheap fillers. However, due to certain health risks posed by traditional skin care products, it may end up being much more expensive in the long run.
Lower-quality ingredients used in many cheaper skin care products can bring with them long-term side effects that are much more expensive. Such ingredients can cause acne, loss of skin elasticity, thinning of skin, and more. While you may be saving a few bucks at checkout, there’s a chance you’ll be spending those same bucks (and many more) elsewhere if you don’t take proper care of your skin.
Additionally, higher-quality skin care can benefit your wallet in a more subtle way, in that you just plain need less. More affordable brands tend to use a lower concentration of the key, good-for-you ingredients that your skin wants, making it far less effective. Often, you’ll need to use more of the product and/or over a longer period to achieve the same results you would get from a higher-quality item.
When it comes to skin care, you get what you pay for. Use your knowledge to make educated decisions for your health, the environment, and your bank account!
